Creating a "Sacred Space" for Meditating

While it is not mandatory to set aside, a space to meditate by doing so indicates your commitment to do something positive to improve your mind, body and spirit.

It is possible to meditate just about anywhere, in the park, at your desk at work, even while walking. However, most of us feel more comfortable in the confines of our own homes when fist starting to practice. The area we choose to use can be a small section of a room, a whole room or just a corner in a room. The area decided upon should be as isolated and as quiet as possible. It should be an area with the least amount of distractions. Our meditation area is located in a section of our home office/ exercise/ yoga room. The area of choice will depend on the amount of space available to you.

The area you decide to dedicate to meditating should contain everything you need for the meditation style you have chosen to practice, crossed legs, kneeling or sitting in a chair. You should have your cushions, bench or chair, mats, support cushions, timer or ceremonial bell or gong, soft lighting, soothing sounds such as music or running water, incense, aromatherapy diffuser, candles whichever you are comfortable with and inspirational items such as pictures, statues, flowers, anything that will help to draw you into a meditative state.

Color is always an individual choice but soft soothing colors are more calming and less distracting when trying to focus. Colors such as blue, green and white that promote peacefulness, serenity, coolness, harmony, renewal, clarity and balance are good choices. It does not have to cost a fortune to decorate an area for meditation but it is important to create a comfortable space. The items chosen for meditation should be kept in this area and used strictly for that purpose. If you have to hunt all over for your items, you will soon loose interest.

The area should reflect not only how you feel about your meditation but also how you feel about yourself and life in general. If you area is dusty, cluttered, disorganized that indicates how you feel about yourself and your life. An area that is clean, organized, carefully maintained and ready to use indicates mindfulness and awareness. That is what you will find by meditating, mindfulness and awareness, about yourself, the world around you, your body, mind and spirit.

The area should be a sanctuary. A place to find quietness and tranquility. A place that is pleasing to the senses where you can leave the trials and tribulations of the day behind you. A retreat to reflect and to renew your spirit.

The most important thing when deciding to meditate is to just begin the area you chose will evolve as you evolve.

By all means use sometimes to be alone. Salute thyself; see what thy soul doth wear. George Herbert (1593-1633)
